About koalas:
The koala is a species of small arboreal marsupial that lives in Australia and is endemic to the eastern continent. It is a herbivore, eating mainly leaves and fruit from eucalypt trees. Its diet is shared with possums and gliders.
Its specialised digestive system breaks down the toxic oils found in eucalypt leaves. It also eats fruit from the same tree, but it doesn’t get much energy from this source.
Toxic eucalypt leaves are difficult to digest for most herbivores, but koalas have evolved to specialize in ingesting these toxins. Their cheek teeth grind the tough eucalypt leaves into a paste, allowing the nutrients to be absorbed and the toxins to be digested.
Their stomach is adapted to break down the compounds, and they excrete them as waste. They also have a bacteria in their system that helps them to digest the toxins.
Koalas are nocturnal and active around dawn and dusk, but they will sleep for as much as 20 hours a day to conserve energy. They may move during the day if they are disturbed or if they need to find another tree to rest in.
They are very adaptable animals and can survive on a very limited diet. However, as the world becomes warmer and drier, koalas are becoming less common. They are also a target of habitat loss and are listed as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN).
